How to make an invoice
- Add your details — your business name, address and email, and your logo if you have one.
- Add your client — who you are billing, with their address.
- Set the invoice number and dates — use a new number for every invoice (INV-0001, INV-0002…) and pick a due date. "Net 30" means the client has 30 days to pay.
- List the work — one line per service or product, with quantity and rate. The amounts and total update as you type.
- Add tax, discount or a deposit if they apply, plus your payment details (bank, PayPal, Zelle…).
- Download as PDF to email it, or as Word or Excel if you want to edit it later. The Excel file keeps working formulas, and it opens in Google Sheets too.
Your invoice is saved in this browser automatically, so you can close the page and come back to it.

Set aside money for tax
Freelancers in the US don't have tax taken out of their pay, so a share of every invoice belongs to the IRS. Self-employment tax alone is 15.3% on 92.35% of your profit — about 14.1% — before any income tax. Many freelancers move 25–30% of each payment into a separate savings account. Our 1099 tax calculator works out your exact figure.
Frequently asked questions
Is this invoice generator really free?
Yes. You can make and download as many invoices as you like, with no account, no limit and no watermark.
Do you store my invoices?
No. Everything you type stays in your own browser. It is saved there so you don't lose your work, but it is never sent to us. Clearing your browser data removes it.
Can I add my logo?
Yes. Click "Add logo" and choose a JPG or PNG file. It appears on the preview and in the PDF.
Which currencies can I use?
US dollars, euros, British pounds, Canadian and Australian dollars and many more. Pick your currency in the Options section.
Can I edit the invoice later in Word or Excel?
Yes. Download the Word file to edit it like a normal document, or the Excel file, which keeps working formulas for the amounts and totals. Excel files also open in Google Sheets and Apple Numbers.
What is the difference between an invoice and a receipt?
An invoice asks for payment. A receipt confirms that a payment was made. If your client has paid in full, enter the amount under "Amount paid" so the invoice shows a balance of zero.
